Amphi-Atlantic distribution of the subterranean amphipod family Metacrangonyctidae (Crustacea, Gammaridea) Naturalis
Jaume, Damià; Christenson, Keith.
Members of the strictly stygobiont, continental subterranean amphipod family Metacrangonyctidae are reported for the first time outside the Old World. Two new species of Metacrangonyx are described from two widely separated localities in the Dominican Republic (Hispaniola), one facing the Caribbean and the other the Atlantic ocean. The discovery of metacrangonyctids in the western Atlantic suggests that they are an ancient subterranean lineage tied to the shores of the Tethys belt, and thus weakens previous biogeographic arguments raised to favour their separate and independent family status with respect to the Hadziidae. The discovery in the Mediterranean of marine populations of metacrangonyctids is reported as well, and both findings are used to test...

CAPRELLIDS FROM THE CARIBBEAN COAST OF COLOMBIA, WITH DESCRIPTION OF THREE NEW SPECIES AND A KEY FOR SPECIES IDENTIFICATION Boletín de Investigaciones
Guerra-García,José M.; Krapp-Schickel,Traudl; Müller,Hans G..
The Caprellidae (Crustacea: Amphipoda) of shallow waters of the Caribbean coast of Colombia, South America, are investigated. This is the first study dealing with the caprellidean fauna of this area. A total of 45 stations from Punta Brava to Punta Cañaveral, at Santa Marta region, Colombia, was selected, and samples of algae, coral rubble, sponges, hydroids, bryozoans and sediments were collected from the intertidal zone to 30 m depth. Ten species in seven genera were found (three of which are new to science): Aciconula sp., Caprella cf. penantis Leach, 1814, Caprella danilevskii Czerniavskii, 1868, Deutella caribensis n.sp., D. incerta (Mayer, 1903), D. mayeri Stebbing, 1895, Hemiaegina minuta Mayer, 1890, Paracaprella pusilla Mayer, 1890, Pseudaeginella...

Cladistic analysis of the family Stenothoidae (Amphipoda, Crustacea) Naturalis
Krapp-Schickel, T.; Koenemann, S..
The amphipod family Stenothoidae contains more than 200 species in about 40 genera; these genera are at present often defined not by the presence, but by the absence of synapomorphies, thus defining grades rather than clades. Our phylogenetic analyses yielded 4 groups of stenothoids: a basic proboloidid clade; an advanced and always clearly separated Austral-Antarctic thaumatelsonid clade, with a possibly related Arctic mesometopid clade; and finally a poorly resolved group, the stenothoids sensu stricto, including the large and probably polyphyletic genera Stenothoe and Metopa, each with more than 50 species. It is proposed to study and analyse these groups separately in future, based on better redescriptions of the individual species. Our analyses...

Coexistence of surface and cave amphipods in an ecotone environment Naturalis
Luštrik, R.; Turjak, M.; Kralj-Fišer, S.; Fišer, C..
Interspecific interactions between surface and subterranean species may be a key determinant for species distributions. Until now, the existence of competition (including predation) between these groups has not been tested. To assess the coexistence and potential role of interspecific interactions between surface Gammarus fossarum and subterranean Niphargus timavi, and to determine their micro distributions, we conducted a series of field and laboratory observations. We aimed to determine: (1) species substrate preference, (2) whether the presence of G. fossarum influences the habitat choice of N. timavi, and (3) possible predation effects on micro habitat choice of small juveniles. Throughout a small river in SW Slovenia, N. timavi was predominantly found...

Comparison of oostegite shapes in some gammaroidean species (Crustacea: Amphipoda) Naturalis
Steele, D.H..
Within the superfamily Gammaroidea oostegites vary from broad (primitive) to narrow (advanced). Broad oostegites are found in members of the Acanthogammaridae, Macrohectopidae and a few of the Gammaridae. Most species of the family Gammaridae have broad anterior oostegites and narrow posterior ones. Marine Gammarus species and Echinogammarus show a narrowing trend in the anterior oostegites as well.
